- CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) –
A former northwest Indiana megachurch pastor was sentenced to 12 years in prison Wednesday for sex crimes involving a 17-year-old female church member.
…Schaap pleaded guilty to having a 16-year-old girl transported Illinois and Michigan last year to carry on a sexual relationship.
…In his letters to the girl that were filed last week, Schaap said his relationship with the girl was “God’s plan” and often discusses how he helped save her from self-destruction, helping to put her on a “better path of living — that’s what we call Righteousness.”
From Chicago Tribune:
From Huffington Post:
- A disgraced Indiana megachurch leader who seduced his teenage parishioner evidently told her Jesus wanted them to have sex.
As part of the government’s sentencing memorandum, federal prosecutors this week released incriminating letters between Jack Schaap, the former pastor of First Baptist Church of Hammond, Ind., and his teen victim.
“In our ‘fantasy talk,’ you have affectionately spoken of being ‘my wife,’” Schaap wrote in one letter, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. “That is exactly what Christ desires for us. He wants to marry us + become eternal lovers!”
