Members from a Christian ministry in North Carolina were threatened with arrest this past weekend for giving out food to the needy, which police says goes against certain restrictions in Raleigh, NC.

On the bright side, most church members in American don’t – do NOT – stand a chance of ever being arrested for helping celibate singles over the age of 30 (or widows or the divorced), since churches rarely help celibate singles over 30 years of age but prefer to expend all energy and money helping white, American Christianity’s favorite pet causes:

1 homeless people in the inner city
2 crack addicts / alcoholics in inner city
3 domestic abuse victims/homless people in shelters
    4 orphans in Africa
    5 strippers / prostitutes
6 little girls sold into sex trafficking
7 Christian person caught in sexual- tinged sin (adultery, porn addiction, pre-marital sex, fondling children, etc)
8 youth (people under age 25)

If you do not fall into categories 1 – 8 on that list, you will never, ever be assisted, aided, comforted, or defended by any preacher or American Christian (in particular if they are white and middle to upper class). Ergo that church will never face legal trouble for assisting singles, the divorced, etc

I know in a way that list might look pretty long, but picture this:

1. You’re a person of either gender, whatever skin color, and your doctor just told you that you have some deadly disease, and you may only have six months to five years left to live.

I’m sorry, but that situation is not covered in scenarios #1-8 I outlined above, so if you go to your church pleading for emotional, practical, or financial assistance, your church will blow you off.

2. You’re a person of either gender, whatever skin color, and your auto mechanic just told you that your car is shot. Repairing it will cost more than the value of the car itself. You cannot afford a new car, not even to rent one longer than a few days. There are no bus stops where you live. You need a car to get to your job daily. If you can’t get daily, reliable transport, you will be fired.

I’m sorry, but that situation is not covered in scenarios #1-8 I outlined above, so if you go to your church pleading for emotional, practical, or financial assistance, your church will blow you off.

3. You’re a person of either gender, whatever skin color, and a family member close to you just died. You feel lonely, scared, lost, confused, and in deep pain over the loss. You very much want another Christian to spend time with you weekly or monthly to listen to you talk and cry about the loss. Good luck with that, because….

I’m sorry, but death and mourning is not covered in scenarios #1-8 I outlined above, so if you go to your church pleading for emotional, practical, or financial assistance with this situation, your church will blow you off.

(You’ll also get shamed and given platitudes, eg, “Stop having a pity party! Stop thinking about you, and instead think about how you can serve African orphans! God must have wanted another angel in Heaven, that’s why he took your family member.”)

4. You’re a person of either gender, whatever skin color, and you have clinical depression. You go to a preacher or Christian group asking for compassion and prayer to be healed of depression.

I’m sorry, but emotional or mental problems are not covered in scenarios #1-8 I outlined above, so if you go to your church pleading for emotional, practical, or financial assistance with this situation, your church will blow you off.

5. You’re a person of either gender, whatever skin color, and your business, which you own, is tanking. You’re afraid of losing your business. What will you do for income? How will you pay for rent or food?

I’m sorry, but that situation is not covered in scenarios #1-8 I outlined above, so if you go to your church pleading for emotional, practical, or financial assistance, your church will blow you off.

6. You’re a person of either gender, whatever skin color, and your spouse of X years has just announced they are no longer in love with you and want to end things. You want the church to provide guidance and comfort.

I’m sorry, but that situation is not covered in scenarios #1-8 I outlined above, so if you go to your church pleading for emotional, practical, or financial assistance, your church will blow you off.

See? There are plenty of situations in life, plenty of painful, difficult things that can happen to anyone and every one that does not involve being a homeless crack addict, sold into sex slavery, or working as a stripper, or you having some kind of on-going sexual sin in your life, or being an African orphan.

If your struggle and pain does not fall into a very limited set of issues (as on the first list above), most white middle- to upper- middle class Christians, and wealthy mega-church goers and preachers, do not want to lift a finger to help you.

I am not sure if this kind of thing holds true in most Black, Hispanic, Asian churches. It definitely is true among classes of American White Christians.
