Christian Married Father (Promoted by His Christian Employer as being a Family Values Guy) Sexually Assaulted Boys at Christian Camp, Some During Bible Study, Say News Reports – And He Led Sexual Purity Classes for Kids
Several Christian blogs have been covering this story lately.
A married Christian father named Peter Newman is reported to have sexually assaulted under-aged boys that he met at a Christian camp called Kamp Kanakuk in Missouri.
A guy named Joe White is the CEO of Kanakuk Ministries, which includes Kamp Kanakuk.
Newman, the reports say, invited some of these boys over to camp property in off-season, after hours, or to his home – sometimes under the pretense of having them over for Bible study.
According to online news, Newman told some of the boys if they allowed him to masturbate them (or vice versa), it would eliminate sexual temptation for them. These reports say Newman also went on to sodomize these boys or perform oral sex on them (or them on him).
If I am understanding the blog coverage and secular news reports correctly, even though the Christians who ran the camp knew (yes, they knew) that this Newman guy was allegedly fondling children, they did nothing about it.
Further (again, if I am understanding the coverage correctly) Newman was later hired to work at Fellowship Memphis Church, a church which (Link): also protected another known sexual deviant who preyed on girls and women within their church during church hours, despite the fact the folks there were aware of his deviant history.
Of course I find child sexual abuse to be horrible, evil, and deviant.
However, the focus of my blog is not child abuse per se.
I tend to focus on the topic of adult singleness and issues that may be of interest to singles – such as how Christians love to discriminate against, or otherwise ignore, singles, and how they promote this bogus notion that married parents are morally superior to single, childless adults. So, when I link to stories about child abuse, it tends to be in a way that relates to singleness.
When I was reading up on this story – mostly skimming articles, I’ve been a little busy lately to devote much time to writing posts for this blog – I noted how some of the promotional work for this Newman guy by Christians at the camp kept emphasizing what a godly, stand-up guy he supposedly is.
These Christian groups were saying he’s a real great example of “Family Values.”
At one point, the Christians (either the Christian camp or the church, I don’t recall which) had Newman work as a (get this!) speaker about sexual purity for teens at some Christian conference.
Please let that sink in. These people knew this guy was a creepo who sexually exploited kids, but they let him speak at sexual purity meetings. The same Christians who don’t want honest to God virgins or honest to God celibates (who, you know, not only aren’t having sex with other adults, but we sure as hell aren’t molesting children) giving sexual purity lectures.
Several months ago, I blogged the story about Elevation church, helmed by Steve Furtick, a church which allows a known pedophile to hold their sexual purity accountability classes. Yes, really, I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried – you can read about that similar story (Link): here.
All child sexual abuse is terrible, but in my view, there seems to be something extra special disgusting and perverse about child sex abuse when it’s either carried out by a person the kid should be able to trust (such as a clergy person, a biological parent, a teacher, a cop, etc), or when it’s done in the name of God, or under the auspice of learning about God (e.g., at a Bible study the kid is invited to).
Anyway, here are links about this story with some excerpts a little farther below.
Notice how some sources say the Christian groups he associated with touted him as being this great family man with great family values, and how they had him teach at a workshop or whatever about sexual purity – *SMH*
Christians will promote Family Values out the ying yang, but they don’t do anything to actually protect families, not even, arguably, the most vulnerable part of any family: kids. So, Christians should consider taking their family values idolatry and cramming it.
Next, Christians, concerning marriage and dating: stop with the “equally yoked” nonsense.
Yes, I’m aware that apostle Paul mentions being equally yoked a time or two in the New Testament, but this “equally yoked” teaching is not practical and does not work in “real life” today.
There are not enough single Christian men for the single Christian women who would like to marry: free them to marry Non-Christians, so that they will have a greater chance of marrying.
I have many more articles on my site of Christian men, such as Peter Newman, who turn out to be deviant, perverted pieces of trash who abuse other people.
An unmarried Christian woman would be better off marrying a non-molesting, non-abusive, Non-Christian man, than she would the likes of a Christian man such as Newman, or a Christian enabler of abuser, such as White.
If Christian propaganda about married sex were true – that married sex is regular, hot, great, etc, which means, they suggest, that one should expect to find Christian husbands not straying from their wives – we should not expect to see stories such as this one, where a Christian man, who is married to a woman, is diddling teen boys in his spare time. But there it is.
In 2010, (Link): Newman pleaded guilty to sexually abusing numerous campers, and received two life sentences plus 30 years in prison. The News-Leader in Springfield, Missouri, reported in 2010 that Newman molested more than 20 boys during his tenure as camp director. He’s currently behind bars at the Jefferson City Correctional Center in Missouri.
The new suit, like the 2011 complaint, was filed by the Turley Law Firm, and says that dating back to 1999, Kanakuk and its founder and CEO, (Link): Promise Keeper Joe White, had to know Newman was a sexual predator. Says the suit, camp officials “knew that Defendant Newman, in the nude, was riding four-wheelers at the ‘kamp’ with nude boys, and swimming nude with minor boys.” He also had boys to the camp for private sleepovers, and, says the suit, “was playing nude basketball with minor boys.”
Excerpts from that page:
[From the police department report: Peter Newman would invite boys over to his home and into his hot tub] …Pete [Newman] would explain that if (the boy) would masturbate with him in his hot tub then there would be no lust and therefore (the boy) would not be sinning.”
….”Pete started masturbating (the boy) and (the boy) would then masturbate Pete.” That led to oral sex when the boy turned 15.
[Newman had other male victims over a period of years, the article explains]
…The questions about what Joe White knew and when he knew it were spelled out in two lawsuits filed against Kanakuk, one in Taney County and the other in a federal court in Texas.
Among the allegations in the Taney County petition:
…-Kanakuk’s cost-saving policies encouraged employees recruiting campers in the off-season to stay with families, providing opportunities for Newman to zero in on potential victims.
–Kanakuk promoted Newman as a “camp director, devoted husband, loving, beloved friend and mentor to youth” long after being made aware of sexual misconduct allegations. Camp officials also allowed Newman to “continue to promote himself all over America as an expert on teenage sexual purity.”
–Newman had one-on-one Bible studies with boys in his hot tub.
…-At a “Purity Conference” in Memphis, Newman engaged a group of boys in sex talk, telling them what it was like to “have sex with a woman now that he was married.”
…The father of a child who was victimized by Pete Newman says White, a nationally known Christian motivational speaker, encouraged him to send his son to Kanakuk following a speech at a Promise Keepers meeting in Irving, Texas.
“Defendant Joe T. White appeared and lectured at a Promise Keepers event at Texas Stadium in Irving Texas. (The father) attended this event and heard (his) presentation advocating Christian values.” White spoke of Kanakuk Kamp and distributed literature, and later sent letters and Internet messages to him, his wife, and other parents encouraging them to send their children to the Missouri camp.
[The son was sent to the camp later, where Newman sexually assaulted him numerous times]
…”At least as early as 1999, Defendant Joe T. White, Kanakuk Ministries and/or Kanakuk Heritage, Inc. knew that Newman, in the nude, was riding four-wheelers at the ‘kamp’ with nude ‘kampers,’ who were minor children entrusted to the care of Defendants. In response to this sexually inappropriate behavior, Newman was placed on probation.”
(Taney County, MO) — A former Christian camp director gets two consecutive life sentences — plus thirty years — for molesting young boys.
Peter Newman worked at Kanakuk Kamp in Branson for ten years.
He pleaded guilty to seven felonies, including Sodomy and Enticement of a Child, involving boys between 11 to 16 years old.
More than 75 people packed the Taney County courtroom Wednesday, tearful and worn down.
The sentencing was not only a look at the pain caused by sex crimes, but also the ripple effect the actions have on victims, family members and a community.
…Peter Newman will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars as his victims grow older and try to recover from his actions.
Newman and Kanakuk Kamps founder and president Joe White are also defendants in the suit. White, who has written 20 books, is a regular speaker at conservative Christian organizations, including Promise Keepers and Focus on the Family.
The crux of the case against White centers on the allegation that the nationally renowned Christian leader swept reports of sexual misconduct under the rug for years before Newman was arrested.
John Doe was abused while attending the summer camp from 2005 to 2007, often under the guise of Bible study and sexual purity exercises. But the suit claims that White knew of Newman’s proclivities as far back as 1999, when the then-camp counselor was placed on probation for riding four-wheelers in the nude with campers.
A federal suit filed in August by a former camper at a Missouri summer camp alleges that the director sexually abused him for seven years, and that the camp’s founder and CEO knew about the inappropriate contact with campers.
The Kanakuk Kamp is a Christian summer camp founded by “Promise Keeper” Joe White. “Kamp” director Peter D. Newman pleaded guilty to sexual assault in 2010 for molesting more than 20 boys, reports The Dallas Morning News.
The complaint by an abuse victim, filed in a Texas federal court, asserts that Kanakuk Ministries, the camp’s parent company, is liable for Newman’s abuse.
…In particular, the complaint asserts that, in some cases as early as 1999, Kanakuk Ministries was aware that Newman would:
- Ride four-wheelers in the nude with nude boys,
- Swim nude with minor boys,
- Have private “one-on-one sleep-overs” with boys, and
- Play basketball nude with minor boys.
By refusing to take action to stop Newman’s abuse, the complaint argues that Kananuk Kamp essentially ratified and approved his conduct.

To re-cap the points behind this entire post:
1.) Equally yoked is stupid and unpractical.
Church and Christian organizations are not necessarily safe places for single Christian women to seek and date single, Christian men, as some of these places are harboring self professing Christian men who are child rapists or other types of deviants.
2.) Marriage and Parenthood are not Sanctifiers.
Being married or a parent are not guarantees that a person will be more godly, ethical, mature, or sexually pure than a non-parent or non-married person.
3.) Christians have deified the concept of the Family and Family Values. Stop doing that, Christians.
That so many of their own, who promote “family values,” keep getting caught as being sexual perverts should be a clue that they need to stop promoting “family values.” (The Bible does not promote “family values.” The Bible talks about being conformed to the image of Christ; they are not the same concept.)
4.) Get Actual Virgins to Promote Sexual Purity, Not Those Who Have Failed at Sexual Purity
Christians keep choosing known sexual sinners (adulterers, fornicators, child molesters) as sexual purity consultants, Sunday School teachers, or conference speakers: stop it.
Consider getting honest-to-God adult virgins to give lectures about sexual purity – you know, adults who are actually living out that life style, who have succeeded, not failed, at it.
