ABINGDON, Va. –A Galax man accused of killing a woman and her daughter will serve 60 years in federal prison on child pornography charges.
Richard Nofsinger, 37, previously pleaded guilty to three counts of producing child pornography. On Tuesday, in a United States District Court, Judge James P. Jones sentenced Nofsinger to 60 years in federal prison.
Nofsinger is also charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Galax resident 28-year-old Alyssa Kenny and her 21-month-old daughter. He has not yet gone to trial on those charges, according to WDBJ.
The mother and daughter were found dead inside their home on Laurel Street in Galax on March 10. The town of Galax is located off Interstate 77, near the Virginia-North Carolina line.
Acting United States Attorney Rick A. Mountcastle said Nofsinger targeted single mothers in order to sexually abuse their young children.
Nofsinger’s cell phone had eight videos with sexually explicit images of children, according to evidence presented at his Sept. 2016 hearing. Nofsinger engaged in sexual conduct with at least two different children on the videos, according to court documents.

ABINGDON, Va. – Few eyes were dry in U.S. District Court in Abingdon on Tuesday when the mothers of small girls who were sexually abused by a Galax, Virginia man read statements to the court.
Judge James P. Jones sentenced Richard Denny Nofsinger Jr., 37, to 60 years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to three counts of manufacturing child pornography.
…“It’s not possible for us to determine the scope of his crimes,” Bockhorst said in the courtroom. “He preyed on numerous young mothers and their daughters.”
Investigators identified at least four girls who were abused by Nofsinger. Officially, the three counts he pleaded guilty to as part of a plea agreement involved two of the girls. Four other counts were dropped.
Nofsinger, who is also charged with capital murder in the deaths of a Galax mother and her child, was arrested last May. During testimony Tuesday, Special Agent Matthew Halin of the Secret Service said further investigation found multiple cell phones, memory cards, flash cards, DVDs and a laptop containing 356 images and more than a dozen videos featuring sexual exploitation and molestation of children.
Halin said the images were downloaded from the internet and the videos were produced by Nofsinger. Agents did not find evidence that he uploaded the videos to the internet.
Special Agent Greg Watson of the Secret Service described Nofsinger as a “drifter type” who hung out around apartment complexes and dated single women with children. Eventually, the women trusted him enough to leave him alone with their children.
In one video, authorities say Nofsinger is seen interacting with a toddler in a bathtub. Secret Service Special Agent Leslie Cochran testified that the video focused on the girl’s genitals and that she was being bathed in a manner that went beyond an adult simply washing a child.
