Baby Died of Malnutrition, Dehydration, and an E. Coli Infection Caused by Being Left In a Maggot-Infested Diaper for Two Weeks
Cheyanne Harris, 21, left the courthouse in Iowa, US, crying after harrowing pictures of four-month-old Sterling Koehn were shown to a jury
A young [mom] accused of leaving her baby son to die in a maggot-infested nappy [diaper] sobbed in court yesterday.
Jurors were shown photos of tragic four-month-old Sterling Koehn at his [mom] Cheyanne Harris’ trial.
The 21-year-old denies his first-degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death.
Sterling was discovered lifeless in a swing in a dark bedroom in August 2017.
Harrowing photos of the discovery were shown in court as Harris broke down.
The judge called a break in proceedings at Plymouth County Courthouse in Le Mars, Iowa, for the mum to compose herself, Waterloo-Cedars Fall Courierreports.
Footage taken in court shows Harris sob uncontrollably before being led away from the dock.
An autopsy showed Sterling died of malnutrition, dehydration and an E. coli infection caused by being left in a maggot-infested nappy [diaper] for up to two weeks.
The heavily soiled nappy had attracted bugs which had laid eggs, and hatched into maggots. It led to the infant’s skin becoming severely irritated.
The boy’s dad Zachary Koehn has already been sentenced to life in prison.
…But prosecutors said Koehn was an experienced dad and his two-year-old daughter, also in the apartment, was healthy.
