A prisoner cut off his penis in his cell after being told his wife didn’t want to see him in a conjugal visit.
Prison workers saved the unnamed inmate’s life after finding him bleeding to death following his shocking act of self-mutilation and rushing him to the jail health centre.
The horrific incident happened on Christmas Eve in module 10 of a prison called Puerto III in Puerto de Santa Maria near Cadiz in south-west Spain.
An association representing prison workers at the town’s three jails, called TAMPM Puertos, confirmed: ‘An inmate amputated his penis because his wife didn’t want to go to prison to see him.’
It was not immediately clear if medics had been able to reattach the sex organ.
Local reports said he suffered psychiatric problems.
