Costa Mesa police on Friday continued searching for a man who allegedly recorded himself pepper-spraying two women outside of a nightclub at the Triangle Square retail center.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 25-year-old Johnny Young.
“Young, a self-described involuntary celibate (incel), is wanted in connection to several hate crimes,” the Costa Mesa Police Department said in a statement.
“Incel is commonly defined as: A person who regards himself or herself as being involuntarily celibate and typically expresses extreme resentment and hostility towards those who are sexually active,” the Police Department statement said.
According to the news release, video footage captured two separate incidents in which Young harassed women with vulgar language and then used a chemical to spray them. The confrontations led to Young “assaulting several people,” authorities said.
Police investigators said Young has a history of targeting and stalking women outside of nightclubs, bars, and fitness centers. He is believed to be living out of his white and green-colored van, which has no license plates.
Police say Young is behind harassment and recordings, which he posts on several online platforms.
“We were able to identify Mr. Young and see that he has hundreds if not thousands of these confrontations on different social media sites,” said Costa Mesa Police Department Lt. Ed Everett.
“It’s evident that Mr. Young is doing these encounters to provoke a reaction from women,” Everett also said.

“His contact with the females are vulgar and explicit, uses explicit language, obviously provoking a confrontation,” Lt. Ed Everrett, with the Costa Mesa Police Department said. “He’s asking women to show them their body parts. He asks if they’d like have intercourse. He asks them to be descriptive. For a number of people, that’s very offensive.”
The offensive language and suggestions is when detectives said the confrontations with women escalate and he pulls out the pepper spray.
Separate video, also taken in Costa Mesa, shows Young harassing another woman in a parking garage. Using in appropriate language, he propositions the woman while following her.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office has filed hate crime charges against Young for targeting women, as well as assault with a deadly weapon and use of pepper spray.

A man who on several occasions recorded himself making sexually explicit comments to women and sometimes spraying victims with a chemical agent is being sought by Costa Mesa police and is possibly facing a hate crime charge.
Authorities began investigating the suspect after an assault last November.
…The suspect, later identified as Johnny Deven Young, began “verbally harassing” the woman, using “explicit language, saying he wanted to see her genitals, and asked to have sexual relations with her,” police said in a news release.
The man who was on the ground saw Young harassing the woman and ran to help her. But as the man approached, Young allegedly used a chemical agent to spray the man and the woman, police said.
…Investigators learned Young has a history of targeting or stalking women outside of clubs, bars and in fitness centers. He allegedly approaches and follows women while using explicit language and says he wants to have sex with them while recording the encounters.
Young, 25, is wanted on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, hate crime and discharge of tear gas, police said.
Costa Mesa police Lt. Ed Everett said Young has a number of social media sites where he identifies himself as an incel, or an involuntary celibate.
He is believed to be a transient, staying with friends or living in his van, and has connections to L.A., Orange and San Diego counties. His last known address was in Las Vegas.
Young and another man were kicked out of a club in Las Vegas and arrested after a similar incident there, Everett said.
“When they were leaving they basically claimed ‘white power’ and some other stuff along those lines,” the lieutenant said.

The department is asking for the public’s help in trying to find Johnny Young, 25, whose last known address was in Las Vegas, Nevada, police said.

He also records the encounters. There were three such episodes in Costa Mesa in recent months.
