Uber is facing a lawsuit from a firm representing women who claim they were assaulted by drivers who use the ride-hailing platform.

The complaint, filed Wednesday, claims that “women passengers in multiple states were kidnapped, sexually assaulted, sexually battered, raped, falsely imprisoned, stalked, harassed, or otherwise attacked” by their Uber drivers.

… The law firm said in a press release, “As early as 2014, Uber became aware that its drivers were sexually assaulting and raping female passengers; nevertheless, in the eight years since, sexual predators driving for Uber have continued to attack passengers, including the plaintiffs whose claims were alleged in today’s action,”

Uber has launched a new in-app feature that allows its women and non-binary drivers to indicate a preference for accepting women-rider-only trip requests.

The rideshare company has added the Women Rider Preference to provide its drivers with more choice over the rides they accept and give them more confidence to drive during optimum earning hours, like in the evening.

It is accessible through the Uber Driver app and allows female and non-binary drivers to indicate a preference to only pick up women.

Drivers who identify as female and non-binary will automatically have access to the feature.

As women make up a small number of drivers on the platform, there are hopes that the female-friendly feature will encourage more female and non-binary drivers to join and contribute to a more gender equal representation across the international company.

Uber has noted a 40 per cent increase in active female drivers in Mexico since the in-app feature went live in March 2020.

Ride hailing firm Uber is being investigated by US authorities over a complaint about gender discrimination, the BBC understands.

As first reported in the Wall Street Journal, the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) began investigating the firm in August 2017.
Investigators have been interviewing former and current Uber employees and seeking documents from the firm.

Uber told the BBC it was “continually improving” in terms of diversity.
According to the Journal, the EEOC has been seeking information related to hiring practices, pay disparity and other matters as they relate to gender.

Uber has been seeking to improve its performance on diversity and inclusion following widespread accusations of chauvinism at the company under former chief executive Travis Kalanick.

That followed an explosive blog post by former software engineer Susan Fowler which went viral in early 2017.

In it she outlined a hostile work culture for female employees and recounted how the company’s human resources department refused to punish her former manager, who had propositioned her for sex, based on his productivity.

… Under new chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi the firm has overhauled its hiring, review and compensation practices, but it continues to face problems.

In May another former software engineer sued the firm over sexual harassment, race discrimination and other claims.
