A man living in the country illegally stabbed his wife to death before slitting his own throat in front of her three children Monday night.
Officials with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said they were first alerted to the home in Deltona, Florida after a neighbor reported a 10-year-old boy ran to his house because his stepfather stabbed his mother.
The boy also told authorities his stepfather tried to stab him as well, but he was able to get away.
After hearing the boy’s story, his neighbor entered the home, and found Byanca Cruz Tovar, 26, and Oscar Mercado Salazar, 31, on the floor with ‘apparent sharp force injuries’ — along with two young children, who were unharmed.
Deputies pronounced Cruz dead at the scene, while Salazar was transported to a local hospital with a faint pulse before being pronounced dead about an hour later.
He was the biological father of Cruz’s two younger children, aged two and five — and authorities said on Tuesday the horrific murder-suicide came amid a dispute between Salazar and Cruz over the behavior of their 5-year-old.
Salazar has had two prior arrests for domestic assault, and was found to be living in the country illegally under a stolen identity.
‘This is really, really a heartbreaking story,’ Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a news conference Tuesday.
‘It is sickening on one end, again when you look you have their three little kids involved here, a 10-year-old, a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old who don’t have their mother anymore.’
…They also discovered that Salazar had two prior arrests for domestic assaults involving his wife — including one while she was pregnant in 2016.
He had been in the country illegally, police report, and had assumed the name Albertico Garza, a US resident who had his truck and ID stolen years ago in Texas.
