TV Show Triggers Chinese Virginity Debate

TV Show Triggers Chinese Virginity Debate

“He asked me whether I am a virgin,” says Qiu Yingying, bursting into tears.

She has just found out her relationship with boyfriend Ying Qin is over, after he found out she had had sex in the past.

The scene from China’s biggest soap opera right now, Ode to Joy, has triggered much discussion on whether virginity is still a prized asset for women in modern China.

Ode to Joy, now in its second season, tells the stories of five beautiful women from different walks of life who live in the same floor of an apartment complex in Shanghai.

The show, a less risque version of Sex and the City, is popular among women for its focus on romance, careers, friendships and the difficulties women face in the big city.

‘Out-of-dated topic’

Sex education in China is often poor. There are stories of male biology teachers skipping details of the female reproductive system in class and ask students to learn it by themselves.

And parents very rarely share information about sex with their children.

What almost all parents do, however, is warn their daughters not to have any dates before they graduate from university, fearing that they get hurt or become pregnant.

Chinese communities also traditionally expect chastity before marriage.

That means TV dramas are very influential in shaping audiences’ values. They are windows for young audiences, especially young women, to understand sex and sexuality and the ways views are changing.

Double standards on virginity

Zi Yin, a Shanghai-based film assistant producer, told the BBC that even debating the topic was old-fashioned in the 21st Century. She thought it was “disgusting” for the show to make an issue of it.

TBN’s New Line Up and Other Changes as of 2017

TBN’s New Line Up and Other Changes as of 2017

I noticed that starting some time around January or Feb. 2017, TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network – Christian entity), changed its programming a little bit.

They also changed their P.T.L. (“Praise the Lord”) show.

It’s no longer called PTL – they dropped the “TL” and now just call the show “Praise.”

The PTL show used to come on at 4 p.m., and then later around 9 or 10 p.m.

They not only switched up when the “Praise” show airs, but they changed how the show is run, which I am not happy with.

Dating, Marriage, Male Entitlement, and ‘My 600 LB Life’ TV Show

Dating, Marriage, Male Entitlement, and ‘My 600 LB Life’ TV Show

This is going to be one of those posts that meanders all over the place.

I’m not really sure where to start.

I’ve been watching a cable TV show called “My 600 LB Life” for over a year now. Aspects of content I see on this show remind me of some of the subjects I blog about on here.

I’m not sure exactly why I watch this show, but I find it riveting, and sometimes horrifying. It’s a reality program. Each show features a real-life person who is 600 or more pounds over-weight.

I do not watch the show to make fun of or laugh at the obese people.

I watch, I suppose, because I am interested in their life stories and what drove them to cope with life’s problems by over-eating to the point they become morbidly obese.

I also tune in to learn medical information about what happens to a body once it gets up to 600 pounds.

I learned from this show that not only does the body get a lot of fat on it (obviously), and the heart has a harder time pumping, but obese people can and do develop all sorts of secondary issues, such as painful bumps, scales, and swelling on their legs (which are referred to as, or the result of, things such as (Link): Cellulitis and (Link): Lymphedema).

The majority of the time, I feel empathy for the obese people on this show.

I am wishing them all the best and hoping they lose the weight and recover and get over whatever childhood horror and pain led them to over-eat (most cases of this show consist of someone who turned to food as comfort after they were neglected, molested, or abused in childhood).

There have been a few cases on this show, such as Steve Assanti, Chuck, and James K., where I have little to no empathy at all, because the person is whiny, ungrateful, abusive, rude, or incredibly self-absorbed.

‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ TV Show Scene Perfectly Sums Up What It’s Like To Be Single at 40+ When You Had Wanted to Be Married

‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ TV Show Scene Perfectly Sums Up What It’s Like To Be Single at 40+ When You Had Wanted to Be Married

I just re-watched a re-run I had forgotten about. It really resonated – maybe not so much at the time, when I was in my 20s when it first aired, but now that I’m in my 40s and still single, like the character in the skit is, I totally relate.

I will embed the scene below in this post, that someone posted on You Tube (I so hope the video is never pulled down. Sometimes, videos are removed due to copyright infringement claims.)

“Everybody Loves Raymond” is a television situation comedy show that started around 1996. I used to watch it every week and still remember the characters and one or two of the episodes.

This show takes place, starts out, in the late 1990s, before many Americans had the internet – dating sites were still a good ways away, and cell phones didn’t really catch on until around the year 2,000 or a bit later.

Even when dating sites first came out and caught on, many singles did not want to use them.

Even up to around 2005 or so, there was a stigma attached to dating sites. If you used one at that time, you didn’t really want anyone to know, because they might think you were desperate or a loser.

I started watching “Everyone Loves Raymond” again in re-runs about two weeks ago – it comes on some of the local cable channels. If you’re like I am – single over the age of 35 and had expected and wanted to marry – you might really relate to the embedded video in this post, too.

To set it up for you if you’re not familiar with the show:

The show is about a guy named Ray who is married to Debra. Ray’s parents, Frank and Marie, live across the street from Ray and Debra.

Ray’s older brother, Robert (a.k.a. “Robbie”), is a police officer who lives with his parents – the guy was married to a woman name Joanne(?), and if I remember correctly, she won the house in their divorce. Joanne dumped Robert for a guy Robert arrested.

For a long time, Robert was too broke and too depressed to live on his own, so he lived with his parents. Eventually, Robert meets Amy, and they get married. But for a good long time, Robert, who is in his early 40s, is single, can’t seem to meet the right woman, and hates being single.

Dad from TLC’s Conservative Christian ‘Willis Family’ TV Series Arrested for Child Rape

Dad from TLC’s Conservative Christian ‘Willis Family’ TV Series Arrested for Child Rape

The guy in this story, Willis, is a married father who was on a “family values” type TV show, where he was passing himself off as being a good, Christian guy. He has been arrested for having raped a child years ago.

As someone who can be pretty critical of lots of Christians and “family values” rhetoric, I do think I should periodically mention when blogging about these news stories I do realize that not all Christians (or people who have traditional values) are scum bags.

However, these sorts of stories are common enough – stories about guys who claim to be Christ-followers or who are big advocates of “Family Values” who do end up being child molesters or wife beaters – that maybe Christians who are heavily vested in the culture wars might want to take a step back.

I will also remind readers how this story about a married man who is father to numerous biological children who raped a person shows that the Christian propaganda and stereotype that being married and a parent is necessary to being a good, godly, mature, or ethical person is a bunch of nonsense.

Toby Willis — patriarch of the conservative Christian family featured on TLC’s reality show The Willis Family — has been arrested and charged with the rape of an underage girl.

(Link): The New York Daily News reported Saturday that Toby Willis, 46, was arrested and charged by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) for raping an underage girl 12 years ago.

TBI agents carried out a days-long investigation of the charges against Willis, who is the father of 12 children, all of whose names begin with the letter J. The Duggar-like musical family were the stars of their own reality show about traveling the country spreading the Christian gospel and performing country music. However, due to poor ratings, TLC canceled the show in April.

Willis was apprehended in Kentucky where he fled in an attempt to evade arrest. He will be extradited to Tennessee’s Cheatham County Jail, where he will be held without bond.

Willis and his wife Brenda — like Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar — are (Link) Quiverfull parents, adherents to a Christian dominionist sect that encourages married couples to produce as many offspring as possible in order to raise an army of believers.

No, I Do Not Like Richonne (Rick and Michonne as Romantic Couple on television series The Walking Dead) – Sex Can Be Risky in the Apocalypse

No, I Do Not Like Richonne (Rick and Michonne as Romantic Couple on television series The Walking Dead) – Sex Can Be Risky in the Apocalypse

This may be, perhaps, the only, or one of the very few, anti- Richonne blog posts on the internet.

  • To any Richonne Fans Who Are Reading This
  • If you have not seen my “About” page (and I currently have this stated at the top of the blog itself), I seldom permit dissenting views to be published on my blog.
  • Therefore, if you are a rabid Richonne supporter who leaves me a nasty, rude comment in response to this post, I likely will not publish it.
  • I don’t even bother to read the entirety of such posts – the moment I glance a few cuss words or rudeness in the first sentence of a post that is pending, awaiting me to grant permission to publish it, I hit the “trash can” button and delete it. I don’t even read the entire thing once I have ascertained it’s a vitriolic post.
  • So please, don’t waste your time or mine by composing one.
  • There is an addendum below addressing people on Twitter who were commenting to me how having Michonne, a black woman, in a romance with a white guy on this TV show, was supposedly oh- so- important. I have addressed those types of comments much farther blow (towards the end of the post, before the “Related Posts” section).
  • See also: (Link, off site):  Your Status as a Single Person Is a Diversity Issue

I did an internet search or two in the days after the February 21, 2016 airing of the zombie apocalypse show The Walking Dead episode in which the Rick Grimes character has sex with the Michonne character for the first time.

In the vast majority of reaction I see in blog posts or comments on entertainment sites that discuss “Richonne,” most people appear approving or enthusiastic about this TV show pairing. I cannot fathom why this is so.

I remain perplexed at the drooling, nutty, overboard enthusiasm so many TV viewers have for wanting to see TV characters date each other.

Further, if you dare disagree on these other sites about “Richonne” and admit to disliking “Richonne,” no matter how politely you state your views, many of these “Richonne” supporters become unhinged and vitriolic.

I happen to like the Michonne character and the Rick character – Rick has always been one of my favorite characters on the show. I have nothing against either actor who plays these characters.

However, I do not like or enjoy a Michonne-Rick romantic pairing.

I did not enjoy the show attempting to romantically pair Rick up with Jessie, either.

(Jessie was later killed by being eaten by zombies).

I mention this early on, as a lot of these Richonne fans wrongly assume anyone who dislikes “Richonne” must be a “Jessie – Rick shipper.”

Five Things We Wish We Could Tell the Girls on ‘The Bachelor’ by A. Shull and S. Saputo

Five Things We Wish We Could Tell the Girls on ‘The Bachelor’ by A. Shull and S. Saputo

(Link): Five Things We Wish We Could Tell the Girls on ‘The Bachelor’

Excerpts:

  • …The whole concept of the show is mind boggling in and of itself; 28 girls are competing for one bachelor.
  • …It saddens us to listen to how these girls talk about themselves. They are putting all their hopes, dreams, and futures into one man. With that being said, here are the five things we wish we could say to the girls on The Bachelor and to the girls reading this who may have been rejected.
  • ONE. Rejection.
  • You are lovable. Rejection is simply redirection. Just because Ben rejected you, it does not mean you will never find a good guy. He just isn’t the guy for you, and that’s OK.
  • Actually, that is better than OK! He is dating a dozen women at once, so be thankful that you don’t have to be in the emotional game anymore. You deserve better!
  • You will find a man who will love you! You don’t want to be second place in any man’s eyes. It is the most amazing feeling to me (Alyssa) that my husband has eyes only for me.
  • TWO. Virginity
  • Being a virgin should not make you the black sheep of the house. Becca is known as the virgin on the show, and good for her! Go Becca! Our culture often considers virgin as a bad word as if something is wrong, dirty, or even unhealthy about you if you haven’t had sex yet.
  • Waiting is beautiful, and it is something you should be proud of.
  • As someone (Alyssa) who was a virgin on my wedding night, I am sitting here 10 years later and am still so thankful that I saved myself for my husband.
  •  At the same time, being a virgin should not be the only thing that defines who you are as a person. So much is said on social media and on the show about how Becca is the virgin of the house, but there is so much more to Becca than that!

Actor Charlie Sheen Says on TV News Show He Has HIV – also says he had unprotected sex with women

Actor Charlie Sheen Says on TV News Show He Has HIV

I’ve read here and there on news sites, and have heard on news shows over the years, that Charlie Sheen was a promiscuous guy. I think some of these news sources says he’s even paid for prostitutes before.

Some sites are reporting that women he has sex with did not know he was HIV positive – he never told them this, but he had sex with them anyhow, and they are (understandably) very angry. (But at least one woman says, according to one site, she was not angry to find out he had HIV and she didn’t know, and one says she did know but had sex with him anyway.)

One of the only things I care to say about this is that it’s an example of how being celibate can pay off.

When you are abstaining sexually, you don’t have to be concerned about getting a sexually transmitted infection.

See, if you are celibate, you don’t ever have to be worry about making it on to an LEO list of people who have been exposed to HIV via consensual sex.

The only other observation I care to make about this story: why does a wealthy guy, that I think many women would consider attractive, have to resort to using prostitutes?

I bring this up because on a lot of dating, or “how to score sexually,” advice I see in magazine articles or in blogs (even on Christian ones – about dating only, obviously most Christian sources are not going to support casual sex forthrightly) assumes that if you cannot get dates (or sex), it’s because you are lacking in some way – you must be ugly, fat, poor, or some combination of all these factors.

But here you have a guy, Charlie Sheen, movie actor, who “has it made” by most people’s standards, and yet, he apparently cannot get a girlfriend on his own, but has to pay women to keep him company or to have sex with him?

Obviously, being thin, attractive, famous, and / or having money, as he does, does not guarantee getting dates, sex, or having healthy relationships, as so many dating columns suggest those things will.

I do believe that Sheen has been married a time or two before, so contra much of Christian wisdom, being married does not make a person more godly, mature, or sexually pure.

Edit. Nov 23, 2015:

(Link): Did Charlie Sheen Give Male Lovers Herpes?

  • Radar Online has dropped a huge bomb, (Link):  claiming that they are in possession of a video tape of Sheen engaged in sex acts with men.
  • “RadarOnline.com has viewed a series of outlandish clips as part of our investigation into the controversy engulfing Sheen.
  • “They show the drugged-up former Two and a Half Men star smoking a crack cocaine pipe and performing fellatio on a male lover. In a bombshell world exclusive, Radar can reveal that at least three videos were recorded of the thrice married father-of-five. The clips last about 30 seconds and depict Sheen smiling on cameras as he brazenly indulges in the illegal drug.”
  • …Business Times has revealed that there has been buzz around since 2011 that (Link): Charlie Sheen was knowingly spreading herpes to his partners.
  • “According to the media outlet, Sheen was the actor identified only as someone of ‘substantial international fame’ in the “J Roe v John Doe” lawsuit that alleged that a megastar hatched a ‘nefarious plot’ to lure victims into sexual acts despite having herpes.”
  • They also claim that Sheen has been secretly bisexual for years, and Sheen does not want that information revealed to the public.

  • by Adam Howard
  • Actor Charlie Sheen confirmed rumors that he has the HIV virus in a revealing interview Tuesday on NBC’s “TODAY” show, adding a shocking new chapter to one of the most unpredictable careers in Hollywood history.
  • “I am here to admit that I am in fact HIV positive,” Sheen told “TODAY” host Matt Lauer. “I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about me, that threaten the health of so many others that couldn’t be further from the truth.”
  • Sheen said he first discovered he had contracted the virus that causes AIDS “roughly four years ago.”
  • …When asked if he knows how he contracted HIV, Sheen said, “Sitting here today, not entirely, no.” He did, however, rule out intravenous drug use.
  • In California, if you do not disclose your HIV status to a sexual partner you can open yourself up to felony prosecution, but there has to be further evidence to imply intent to infect. According to state law evidence that a person is aware of their HIV-positive status is not enough to prove intent.
  • Sheen also admitted to having paid off several unnamed people, some of whom were prostitutes, in order to keep his HIV status a secret.
  • He said the total of payoffs had reached into the millions and that several people he had trusted had betrayed him, which was in part why he was coming forward now.

We need more penises on our screens by O. Rickett

We need more penises on our screens by O. Rickett

I’m not keen on nudity in movies and TV, but so long as the media are going to be lop sided and only show nude women, or show nude or scantily clad women more often than they do men, I think turn about is fair play, and therefore, male nudity should be shown in equal amounts.Though most women do not find penises attractive, but that’s not the point.

(Link): We need more penises on our screens by O. Rickett

  • Russell T Davies has got it right with Cucumber. We have a puritanical reaction to male nudity that is both sexist and a denial of the lives we lead
  • Sex – whether we have loads of it or none of it – is a part of all of our lives. But on the screen, its depiction is often met with shock or silliness. Female actors are often objectified, the reasons for their nudity sometimes having little to do with character, and everything to do with satisfying the male gaze.In mainstream films and television, male nudity often falls into two camps. On one hand, you have the man whose nudity is threatening. He is, to paraphrase Jean-Paul Sartre, a hunter and his penis is a knife.
  • On the other, you have the beaten-down man, his shrivelled member hanging uselessly between his legs as the subtext screams: “This man is pathetic.” Depictions of penises, then, provoke extremely mixed emotions. They are the totem of potency but also anxiety – one man feels great power in his penis while another feels terrible passivity, and it’s these two emotions that are almost always evoked by male nudity on the screen.
  • The television producer and writer Russell T Davies, whose new show Cucumber features plenty of male-frontal nudity, has said that there is not enough of it on TV. “It’s only [seen as] rude because the rest of television is rather tame – it doesn’t actually talk about sex and our bodies and how we feel about them,” he told the Telegraph. Davies is right. Television remains in the grip of a strange puritanism, an unwillingness to recognise sex and nudity as a natural, important part of the lives we lead.
  • ..This is something that comes up repeatedly. Joanna Coates, director of the independent British film Hide and Seek, which won the Michael Powell award at last year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival, told me that because the film deals with sex and nudity openly and without shame, “some people assumed we were trying to be shocking”.
  • Sex is central to the film, and the character’s attitudes to sex tell us something about their attitudes to life. Erect penises abound, but not as deliberate provocation and not in a way that’s meant to provoke schoolboy titters. If we react with shock, it’s our own reaction we have to interrogate.
  • ….These schoolboy titters are all too often how we greet male nudity on screen. It’s like none of us moved beyond running around the playground in a circle squealing “Willy! Willy!”
  • Male nudity hasn’t been a big deal in independent cinema or in the theatre for a while, but Ben Affleck’s member shows up for one second in Gone Girl and suddenly everyone’s shouting Sodom and Gomorrah. In that scene, the two characters are sharing a moment of intimacy that would look ridiculous if they weren’t naked. They are in the shower – the nudity is vital.

Update on Born Again Virgin Reality Star TV Guy – and Christians and Their Smokin’ Hot Wives

Update on Born Again Virgin Reality Star TV Guy – and Christians and Their Smokin’ Hot Wives

I’m pretty sure this is the same guy I blogged about here:

For what it’s worth, I am opposed to anyone using phrases such as “Born Again Virgin,” “Spiritual Virgin,” etc. You can click that link above to see why.

If we’re going by penis in the vagina standards to define sex, either one is a virgin or is not a virgin; there is no such thing as a “born again virgin” or “spiritual virgin.”

This comes from SCCL’s Facebook page:

(Link): Sean Loweksu Status – where he refers to his wife as being “smokin’ hot”

Comment by Ariella Tuttle on that thread,

  • He was all about that purity stuff on the show…while he was tonguing like 15 different girls. I think 2 at the same time?

That thread attracted the attention of a few male sexist assh-les who think it’s okay for men to refer to their partners as “smokin’ hot.”

In his facebook status (which is pictured in the SCCL thread), Loweksu refers to his wife as “smoking hot.” Christian men often like to refer to their wives as being “smoking hot,” which is sexist.

Men need to get over valuing women purely, primarily, or only based on their looks.

I was engaged to a man who, for years, would go on and on about how “beautiful” I was, even after I told him that while I appreciated the sentiment, but it had none the less worn thin, and I’d prefer him to praise me on my career, and so on. I actually felt de-valued that he kept harping on my looks.

He never took an interest in my intellect, my opinions about politics or whatever else,/ With my ex, my greatest virtue or asset in his view always came down to how sexy I looked in skirts.

Some of the people in the SCCL Facebook thread are making a distinction between a man who does refers to his wife or sweetie as “smokin hot” in private vs one who does so on social media, in public.

My ex mostly complimented me on my Smokin’ Hot looks in private, but it still grated on my last nerve, I still found it insulting, and it was sexist and rude.

It is NOT “nice” or complimentary to a woman to pay attention to her looks or clothing, but so many men think it is. It’s not. Knock it off.

Women want to be noticed for their brains, hobbies, talents, and career, NOT their weight, hair, manner of dress, sexy legs, bust size, whatever.

Some of the only women who do enjoy this sort of compliment are generally insecure ones – the ones who were once ugly ducklings and the acne cleared up one day, they dropped the weight, and suddenly, they find themselves getting male attention.

I was actually in that group myself – used to have frizzy hair, weight problems – but turned into the beautiful swan; however, I detest it when the only thing men focus on is a woman’s looks, or only my looks in particular. It’s probably one of my top ten pet peeves in life.

If you are a man who is a FATHER, and your dear daughter is dating some guy or marries some guy, would it not bother you in the least if the only quality her husband or BF ever praised her over was her looks?

Wouldn’t you want that ass-clown noticing she’s funny, smart, and accomplished, and for him to tell her so?

How about if your parents divorce, your mother remarries, would it not turn your stomach for your stepfather to ONLY notice and care about your mother’s looks, and never notice or care about her brains, talents, etc?

That’s how women feel when men go on and on judging us for our looks, rating us on scales of one to ten, but don’t bother to take an interest in us as human beings.

Edit. although one idiot posting to the SCCL thread claims to be a father actually wrote,

  • post by Buzz Suplita
  • I have three daughters, no sons. I hope each of their future husbands “disrespects” them and all women in just this way.

And what if your DAUGHTERS do not want to be reduced to their looks and body parts, you’d still be fine with men objectifying them? Buzz is one creepy father.

Being objectified for one’s looks is something that happens to the female gender far more often and consistently than it does the male gender.

Some of the men chiming in on that thread are either trolling or are being deliberately obtuse. Despite the fact they’ve had it explained to them six ways from Sunday why men publicly referring to their wife as “smokin’ hot” is sexist, they keep saying, “I don’t get it,” “how is this wrong,” or “how is this sexist.”

Here is one comment to some of them, by Annie Dotes, that I agree with:

  • Mike- you’re floating freely between talking about the specific dude [“The Bachelor” reality TV star guy] and talking about the cultural phenomenon. Every time someone addresses one of those you counter with the other. I have repeatedly taken great pains to distinguish between the two. (See my comment 3 above yours).
  • What you are doing is called moving the goalposts, it is a logical fallacy. If you’re being disingenuous on purpose, then knock it off. If you’re actually not keeping up then slow down and read through it again.

This pic and caption [the photo posted by The Bachelor guy referring to his wife as being “Smokin Hot”], regardless of Mr Bachelor’s intentions, reflects a cultural misogyny where women are primarily valued for the sexual feelings they give men, and their status as conquests. He is participating in that cultural misogyny regardless of his intentions.

Anyway, here are links on other blogs about the annoying, sexist habit of men to objectify all women, or their wives in particular, by referring to them as Smokin Hot.

Family Guy airs controversial Jesus episode, ‘The 2,000-year-old virgin’

The creator of this show, McFarlane, is an avowed atheist. Pulling stuff like this makes him an ass hat.

You’ll notice that the episode says that Jesus has to lose his virginity to ‘become a man.’

I am over 40 and am a grown woman and a virgin – I don’t need to have a penis in my vagina to become a woman; I already am a woman.

By the same token, a man does not need to put his penis in a woman’s vagina, or any other orifice, to qualify as a man, or to ‘become a man.’.

Christians unfortunately buy into this notion that one is stunted or immature until and unless one has sexual intercourse, though Christians usually frame it in terms of marriage and parenthood.

Having sex does not make a person a grown-up. Being married does not make a person a grown-up. Having children does not make a person a grown- up. Having sex, being married, and pro-creating are not necessary benchmarks to become a full fledged adult.

Excerpts:

  • Titled, “The 2,000-Year-Old Virgin,” it surrounds character Peter Griffin, among others, trying to help Christ lose his virginity, according to Christian Today.
  • “After running into Jesus at the Quahog Mall, Peter is stunned to discover that the Son of God is still a virgin,” reads the episode’s synopsis. “So, he enlists Quagmire and Cleveland to help him throw Jesus the best birthday ever by finding a way to help him become a man.”
  • At one point during the episode, Jesus has a specific request for Peter regarding his wife Lois, telling him that he wants to lose his virginity to her — a request that the husband agrees to in exchange for a massage chair.“Look Peter, I know it’s a lot to ask, but if it wasn’t okay I wouldn’t suggest it,” Jesus said while trying to convince Peter to agree.

Later, while speaking with her husband and considering Christ’s request, Lois said, “The son of God’s first time should be special.”

In the end, though, both Peter and Lois change their mind and decide against the plan after it is revealed that Jesus tricks husbands every year into allowing him to sleep with their wives.

Where have all the TV dogs gone? – indication of the decline of the nuclear family

Where have all the TV dogs gone? – indication of the decline of the nuclear family

(Link): Where have all the TV dogs gone?

Excerpts

  • People love dogs as much as ever. So why have sitcoms abandoned them?
  • Name a dog who’s famous for appearing on television. No, not Lassie — a dog who’s on TV today.Got one? Good. You might be thinking of Isis, the Earl of Grantham’s yellow Lab on Downton Abbey, or possibly Stella, the French bulldog spoiled by patriarch Jay on Modern Family. Digging deeper, on Parks and Recreation there’s Andy and April’s three-legged mutt, Champion, who can claim maybe five minutes of total screen time over six seasons. We’re also told that Mike’s mother on Mike & Molly owns a Brussels Griffon named Jim, whom we’d describe in further detail if we could ever bring ourselves to watch Mike & Molly.
  • ….As Robert Thompson, a professor of television and film at Syracuse University, tells us, “The family dog has fallen upon hard times.” But it wasn’t always this way.
  • In the 1950s, dogs weren’t just obligatory members of seemingly every TV family — they actually anchored their own iconic shows, like The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin and, yes, Lassie. And the ’90s saw a veritable TV dog renaissance, with beloved canine characters prominently featured in network staples like Empty Nest, Married With Children, The Drew Carey Show, Spin City, 7th Heaven, Dharma & Greg, and Full House.
  • …The dogs of ’90s television, Thompson argues, offered a “retro feel” audiences craved, in direct reference to the comedies that came before. On Mad About You and Frasier, the foregrounded presence of dogs made unconventional family situations feel more, well, familiar.
  • ….Over the last two decades, we’ve experienced what Thompson calls a “complete shriveling up of the traditional family sitcom.” The root of the problem, he suggests, is that there can be no family dog without a family.
  • “The style of so many of these shows has infantilized the characters themselves so that you no longer need a dog to stand in for an infant or child,” he says. “Everyone on Two and a Half Menand The Big Bang Theory is in a state of arrested development. On Arrested Development, it’s right in the title.”

TBN Airing Special on Founder Paul Crouch Sr – Why?

TBN Airing Special on Founder Paul Crouch Sr – Why?

My online TV Guide says that TBN (Christian channel) is airing a 2 and a half or three hour special on founder Paul Crouch Sr. today, starting at 3:00 PM.

I cannot fathom why. Outside of his family, I cannot imagine many people who are that fascinated with Crouch Sr that they’d want to watch.

As I’ve noted before on the blog, in some very old posts, the folks who own TBN sometimes make the channel more about themselves than they do Jesus Christ, which I don’t understand.

I would assume this two or three hour program will be a snooze fest and will not be tuning in to watch. This being TBN, I can only assume they will either air this Paul Crouch special at least once a year, or as much as a few times a week over the next few months.

And on a commercial break promoting this special, TBN just showed a painting of Jesus hugging Paul Crouch.  It looked rather cheesy. Perhaps I can find a copy of it. Okay. This is a screen cap from the TBN site.

Weirdness. Total weirdness.
