The NBA has long been a supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, even famously moving a game from Charlotte, North Carolina, due to the state’s bathroom bill.
However, the NBA is now planning to hold its All-Star game in the United Arab Emirates, where homosexual activity is a crime punishable by death.
The games in Abu Dhabi, between the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks, are scheduled for Oct. 6 and 8 at the Etihad Arena.
In the UAE, those found guilty of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender might only face fines, forced mental health treatment, life in prison, chemical castration, or floggings if they’re lucky. The less fortunate ones are executed.
This is hardly the first glaring display of the NBA’s hypocrisy on human rights. Its cozy relationship with China is another example.
