Excerpts:
William Choyce raped and murdered three women and sexually attacked several others – he is now on death row
William Choyce seemed like the perfect, middle-class family man – but he was hiding a dark secret behind his respectable facade.
To the outside world, he looked like the perfect husband and father but Choyce is hiding a sinister sexual deviation.
Crime+Investigation’s I Lived With A Killer examines what drove a seemingly devoted dad and partner to become a serial rapist and murder .
Growing up in “good” family, Choyce wanted for little and along with his parents, went along to church every Sunday.
When he was a teenager, Choyce met his wife-to-be, Alice, when she and her family moved into his street in Oakland, California.
…After dating for four years, the couple tied the knot and two years later are delighted when their daughter, Crystal, was born.
Theirs is a normal middle-class family life – until one night comes home and tells a story that changes everything.
He claimed he had been robbed and that there needed to be a gun in the home for protection.
But this is when Choyce’s behaviour changed. He would leave home each night, armed, and refuse to tell his wife and daughter where he was going.
…Then, in 1985, Choyce finally caught when he’s arrested for soliciting a prostitute and he has to call Alice from the police station.
It was then that their marriage began to collapse with Alice saying her husband’s touch “repulsed” her.
…But while Alice and Choyce are just holding their marriage together, his relationship with his daughter has taken a dark turn.
He became furious when she couldn’t tell him exactly what she had learned at school and once beat her for using the wrong face cloth.
Crystal said: “I felt like he didn’t love me. And I just remember feeling like I’m really dealing with a person who is crazy and things were gonna get worse.”
…John Huber Jr, from San Joaquin Country Sherrif’s Department, said: “Somethimes subjects that commit rapes aren’t satisfied with the rape and in William Choyce’s case he was not getting enough of a thrill from just the rape so he escalated to murder.”
His first victim was Victoria Bell, who he picked up while cruising a seedy part of Oakland and bundled into his van before drivig her to a secluded area.
Choyce bound her hands and feet together and shot her. He then dumped her body in a sexually suggestive pose.
When he returned home, Alice immediately noticed something was wrong as he became angrier and angrier at home.
During one of his rages when Alice admitted she feared Choyce was going to kill her and her daughter, she flees with her little girl.
The mother and daughter start a new life and Alice divorced Choyce.
…But Choyce’s violence had not stopped and his attacks were becoming more frequent.
In 1994 a young woman had gone for a walk to calm down after an argument with her husband.
She was bundled into Choyce’s van and raped her at his home while he held a gun to her head.
