Two cases of a worrisome new strain of gonorrhea that’s proven resistant to antibiotics have been discovered, according to Massachusetts health officials.
While both patients improved after being treated with ceftriaxone, the most common antibiotic used to treat the condition, the infections showed resistance to nearly all standard gonorrhea drugs.
The cases, they said, are the first confirmed instances in the US.

Two cases of a novel strain of gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted disease, have been found, health officials in Massachusetts say.
Even though the patients improved once doctors treated them with ceftriaxone, the infections presented resistance to almost all medicines used to fight the disease, the New York Post reported Friday.
…Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) individuals can contract from engaging in sex with an infected person, according to WebMD.

Two cases of a novel strain of gonorrhea that is resistant to a wide variety of antibiotics were reported by Massachusetts health officials on Thursday. These are the first cases of “concerning gonorrhea strain” reported in the US.
“The Department of Public Health (DPH) today announced it has detected a novel strain of gonorrhea in a Massachusetts resident that showed reduced response to multiple antibiotics and another case with genetic markers that indicate a similar drug response,” DPH said in a statement.
Patients were successfully cured after receiving ceftriaxone treatment, the currently recommended antibiotic. However, the new strain of gonorrhea was resistant to a variety of antibiotics.
“This is the first time that resistance or reduced response to five classes of antibiotics has been identified in gonorrhea in the United States,” DPH said.
…The DPH claimed that while the novel strain is new to the United States, it has been found in the Asia-Pacific region and the United Kingdom.
…Gonorrhea is an STD that can cause infection in the genitals, rectum, and throat. It is very common, especially among young people ages 15-24 years, according to CDC.
If left untreated, gonorrhea can cause serious and long-lasting problems, including an increased chance of getting HIV, infection in other parts of your body like your skin or joints, and infertility.

Health authorities in Massachusetts announced Thursday they have identified two cases of a new strain of gonorrhea that appears to have developed resistance to a broad swath of antibiotic treatments.
…Gonorrhea is the second most common sexually transmitted infection reported to health authorities in the U.S., behind chlamydia, according to the CDC.
…Gonorrhea’s “alarming” drug resistance
For years, health authorities have been working to respond to the “alarming” ability that gonorrhea has to develop resistance against antibiotics that have been deployed to combat it.
In 2013, the CDC named gonorrhea as one of the three most urgent threats posed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Both U.S. and world health authorities have launched campaigns to curb new cases of gonorrhea in hopes of controlling the bacteria until vaccines and new treatments are developed.

Public health officials have urged people to reduce their number of sexual partners after cases of “super gonorrhea” have been detected.
Sexually active people have also been warned to get regularly tested for sexually transmitted diseases and to make sure they use condoms.
The new strain of gonorrhea has shown to be resistant to five different types of antibiotics making it particularly hard to treat.
The cases were both identified in Massachusetts, US, and were the first documented cases of such a resistant strain of gonorrhea detected in the country.
Before that they were only seen in Asian-Pacific countries and the UK.
